So this is a post that I have wanted to do for a while as we start to see Alec stand up to people in his life standing up to your family is the hardest thing that you will do especially as a person with a disability. As they want to protect you but you want to be challenged yourself to live your best life.
However that life is different for everyone even without a disability due to the decisions they made and the circumstance's that they
were born into . Alec didn't decide for himself what he was to be in life he was essentially born to be a Shadowhunter and that is his world. He even states directly that he will never understand "Mundanes," as the world that he has been brought up in is the Shadoworld.
We start to see the disapproval of his family as yes it would have been better to call off the Wedding to not embarrass Lydia and his family, however, we see that Alec really up until the last minute does believe he is doing the right thing. But we do see that the family is challenged by Alec's decision and his sexuality and this is something that the actors that play Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane ( Alec Lightwood is played by Matthew Daddario and Magnus Bane is played by Harry Shum jr) have talked about being very respectful to the relationship and how it plays out. This did win them awards for representation.

Also, Maryse does make this about herself and the family and Mangus starts to see the complexity of Shadowhunter's families. We also see Alec's father ask about whether are they in love and try to understand what is happening. Yet we do see the Shadowhunter's prejudice at play here. It's not on the surface about the gender of the warlock and it is a same-sex relationship but the fact he is a down order is the issue. We see Alec's relationship with his parents being quite combative at times. So there for the other relationships are also quite combative. As Alec is competing to be his person.
We don't see much of the lightwood parents as they seem to be away a lot so this is why Alec is the acting head of the institute. Yet we see a stark difference in the way that Maryse and Robert treat their children. They are very hard on Alec and Izzy but not hard on Jace and this seems to be a common issue in some families that isn't talked about it is a complex called the golden child.
Dysfunctional Family Roles — Out of the Storm
Yet when Alec gets positive attention he is very confused by it and seems to not know how to respond and we start to see this due to his relationship with his parents, that are more obsessed with their political careers than their children.
Have talked about how they played the scene out that they both steel themselves for the fallout and Magnus says about not underestimating the power of a mother's love. We do see Maryse develop into a kind person when she is stripped of her runes and position due to her role in the Circle as well.
